Jose Hilome. Born in 1947 in the town of Jeremie on the southwestern tip of Haiti, Hilome Jose moved to Port-au-Prince in the late 1960's where he worked as a carpenter. Through a mutual friend, Jose met and later became a student of the famous Haitian artist Henry Calixte. Hilome Jose is now one of Haiti's most respected modern/primitive artists, a knife painter with a distinctive style and perspective. His colorful acrylic works, usually on masonite or canvas, are vivid depictions of peasant life in Haiti. His work is included in many private art collections worldwide. Illustrations of his work may be seen in Eva Pataki's book, Haitian Painting Art and Kitsch.
